Below-Starting a new metalworking business
The mission of Shop Outfitters is not just to provide you with well-engineered metalworking equipment that is the foundation of a number of business opportunities. Except for hobbyist and our school shop-class purchasers, the main reason that anyone buys our equipment is to start an income-earning business. Therefore, we provide instruction manuals and books for that specific purpose. Our "Show & Tell Project Idea Book can be shown to potential customers as a sales helper. Most projects on this website were taken from our books. Some were provided by our equipment owners. The many project photos therein cover a wide range of metalworking businesses. With over fifty years of welding and fabrication experience I have learned things that can be helpful to your new business. Read more about this at the bottom of this page. I would encourage anyone considering getting into the metalworking business to do so. The ornamental business in particular can be started with minimal investment. It also gives you the opportunity to be creative which can provide a real sense of satisfaction and accomplishment. The shortage of welders and fabrication experienced managers makes pursuing a metalworking business a good choice. For those interested in ornamental ironwork or general fabrication some projects in those categories which generated the most interests are seen in the fifteen photos below in this column.
Shown below are a few projects I built in Minnesota in the 1970s. Do you think it takes a lot of money to get started? Take a look at the kid in the fifth picture below standing next to an old, dilapidated Quonset house he called home. That kid was fortunate enough to escape abject poverty, along with his brothers and sister, all of which went on to own or run significant businesses. His father is seen in fifth photo below along with several projects he built in the 1960s in Tucson, Arizona. Despite being poor his strong work ethic, which he imparted to his kids and grandkids, led to many of them becoming business owners and operators. The kid in the Quonset house photo is me and that is my dad in the fourth photo. Want to get started? Order the "Show and Tell" book below in the first box.

The foundational strength of a prosperous and successful company has a lot to do with the wise use of time. Unproductive business activities is a luxury that no company can afford. A clear understanding of this principle is crucial. Your company's success level is directly proportional to the degree to which you are willing to avoid unnecessary unproductive business activities. Besides hurting the business, they can also lead to the unintended neglect of one's family. These time-consuming unnecessary activities have too often become the curse of many a business owner. In their quest for success (intended to benefit the family) it seldom occurs to them that the time they should be spending with family is often filled with activities that produce little financial results. Understanding and practicing the principle of avoiding these unproductive activities can greatly improve your competitive edge. Doing so can also improve the mental health of your family. Some portion of now abandoned unproductive time can be now set aside to spend time them. Some other part can be used for quiet reflection. Whether it be off in the woods or up in the mountains (uncluttered by the mental anxiety of dealing with unproductive activities) is where great ideas were born. If one does not abandon them they will never find that place where they can go for quiet contemplation and inspiration.
